Abatements simply mean to correct a violation. Property that is deemed as unappealing, causes property valuations to decline, properties deemed as unfit and unlivable, unkept yards, junk vehicles, dangerous and dilapidated buildings, etc. will all be abated.
CSO Laynie Wilson is in charge of the City of Albia Abatements.
Once a nuisance is identified, a notice, typically via certified mail, will be sent to the owner of the property or current resident, identifying the specific problems with the property. The property owner or current resident will then be responsible for correcting the issues before any further action is necessary.
1. Properties will be inspected for potential abatements via council wards. Wards and their order will be advertised via Facebook; City of Albia - CSO
2. If an issue is identified, photographs will be taken of the property for your information of what needs to be corrected and a letter will be composed identifying the specific issues.
3. Letters will be sent to your address via proof of mailing.
4. You will be provided a reasonable amount of time to get the issue resolved, unless the issue is deemed emergent, in which case the issue must be fixed immediately.
5. If the issue is not corrected within the allotted time frame, further legal action could be taken.
Awesome question -- Let's get you the link to that (Albia City Code 56.01 through 56.09)
